Fantastic Fungi

What is the foundation of life on earth? Cinematographer Louis (Louie) Schwartzberg, who captures breathtaking images that celebrate life revealing connections, universal rhythms, patterns and beauty wants to know. He has gathered scientists, doctors and other naturalists to investigate what he believes is the biggest question of all.

One-third of the food we eat comes from pollinated plants, Schwartzberg said. Plants need soil. Where does soil come from? It comes from the largest organism on the planet that can heal you, that can feed you, that can clean up a toxic oil spill, and it can even shift your consciousness. It’s mycelium the root structure under budding mushrooms. It’s like the Internet, a vast underground exchange network that transfers nutrients from one plant to another.

This film, which Golden Door is helping to fund on Kickstarter, fits perfectly with our commitment to health and nutrition education, said Kathy Van Ness, general manager and chief operating officer. When completed, Fantastic Fungi will provide a deeper understanding of mycelium, and how these organisms enliven our soil to produce nutritious foods and other health benefits. And since Louie is recognized as the expert in high-end time-lapse cinematography, the film is sure to be visually stunning!
