We hear the word simplicity a lot these days…in every facet of life, including your skin care regime! Through time, trends are tried, but ultimately we have all learned that less is more and ensuring you have the proper basics is the key to success. Golden Door Skin Care’s philosophy has always been simple – pure, fresh, high-grade quality featuring plenty of antioxidants to help repair and defend the skin against the constant free-radical aggressors that we face daily. The first step to ensuring that you have the proper basics – cleanser, toner and moisturizer – is to determine your skin type. The following quiz will help you determine your skin type if you are unsure.   Skin Type Quiz 1. What is your skin like when you first wake up? A. Normal – very little change from the night before B. Are Skin Care Toner’s Really Necessary?

April 6, 2015 by Golden Door

Golden Door Skin Care Manager, Andrea Miller, is asked this question frequently, “Are skin care toners really necessary?” and her answer immediately is “Yes!”. There are several reasons why… All skin care toners provide the final step in the cleansing process ensuring that your skin is thoroughly free of any impurities including traces of cleanser. They also ensure that your pH balance is just where it needs to be. Yes, your cleanser is pH balanced, but your tap water is not. Have you ever noticed the water stains or mineral deposit on your faucets or counter tops? Those minerals may be sitting on your skin after you rinse off your cleanser and therefore, causing your pH balance to be off slightly. When your pH balance is not where it needs to be, then all of your other products such as serums and moisturizers may not be performing to their fullest ability, …

January: A Mindful New Year Three Tips to Help Your Intentions Thrive

January 20, 2015 by Carol Tibbetts

How exactly will mindfulness help you stick with your intentions? When you are fully aware in the present moment you do make healthier choices.  Think about it:  When you are unmindful, you lose control over your actions and become reactive.  Mindfulness, like a vigilant personal trainer, helps you become a keen observer of yourself, giving you the wisdom, willpower and patience to stay in balance, which is the key to developing lifelong healthy habits.  Even a little bit of mindfulness goes a long way, so give at least one of these tips a try: 1. Disconnect More from Technology and Reconnect Instead to Your Own Lived Experience so you can be in touch with your feelings and what it is you need to feel fulfilled. Budget usage of email and texts. Unplug as often as possible.  Limit social media time.  Disconnect after sunset or at least an hour before bed …

August 14, 2014 by Nick Poggi

In recent years, the personal training profession has skyrocketed. You can walk in to just about any gym and find it packed with personal trainers ecstatically awaiting for your business. At the same time, we have all heard horror stories about friends or family hiring trainers that pushed too hard, talked too much, or caused injury.  So how do you find that perfect trainer who is going to be safe, effective, and help you to ultimately reach your goals?? The Golden Door fitness team has come up with three tips to help you out. 1) Communication: talking vs. listening The reason we hire a personal trainer is to guide us towards our fitness goals. August Mindful Musing: Acceptance

August 29, 2014 by Carol Tibbetts

Sometimes we find ourselves so fixated on perfection or future results we don’t enjoy what we’re doing in the present.  To build patience and help you stay open to learning, accept where you are now.  Appreciate small successes and the subtle changes or ease with which you perform an activity that will add up and make a difference in the end.  Keep your goal in mind, but avoid fixating on it.  Be content, but not complacent. (Excerpt and photos from August chapter of  “Twelve Mindful Months” by Carol Tibbetts) For more on mindfulness, read  “Twelve Mindful Months:  Cultivating a Balanced & Fit Body, Mind & Spirit” by Carol Tibbetts.  (Available at Golden Door Boutique or shop on-line)  Stay on the mindful path with me by following my posts. Mindful Monday Tip

September 2, 2014 by Carol Tibbetts

Events that force us to slow down – gridlock traffic, red lights, long check-out lines – can serve as reminders to slow down and become aware of what’s going on in the world both around us and inside us. To get out of our heads and into our hearts for even just a few moments.  Use those times as your mindfulness wake-up call.  Stop, look, listen – and just be.  The next time you’re at a red light, resist the urge to use your phone, and make an inner connection instead: Follow your in and out breath.  Or, as you’re waiting for your check in a restaurant or in line at the supermarket, become  present to your surroundings and you may notice that the whole place is busy, there are many other customers, and the waiter or cashier seem to be the only ones working.  As you practice this mindful …

National advocate for the prevention of cancer and author of A World Without Cancer, Margaret I. Cuomo says that 50% of all cancer is preventable by applying what we know right now! By choosing to change our habits and paying closer attention to the products we use, we can limit our risk for cancer and other diseases. As daughter of former New York Governor, Mario Cuomo and current Governor, Andrew Cuomo, Dr. Cuomo’s family tradition of public service is evident. Her ground-breaking book, based on first-hand experience with cancer patients presents a provocative look into the ways that “profit, personalities, and politics obstruct real progress in the war on cancer. How and Why to Reduce Sugar Intake-Part I

June 24, 2014 by Golden Door

By Susan Piergeorge, MS, RDN Many of us have a sweet tooth of some sort. While consuming foods that contain sugar can be a treat, it is also worth taking a look at what it can do to the body over time. Let’s start with some basics. Carbohydrates come in two forms: Simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are a smaller molecule and break down more quickly (hence the term simple). Sugar is a simple carbohydrate. Other names for sugar include sucrose (table sugar), glucose, fructose, corn syrup, honey, molasses, brown sugar, dextrose and malt syrup to name of few. When it comes to metabolism, simple sugars can make blood sugar rise and fall quickly, which can start a hunger and response cycle. This cycle can lead to overeating, because our bodies are truly “craving for more.” Elevated blood sugar levels can wreak havoc on our bodies over the long term, …

DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT WOMEN’S WEEK: The Labyrinth as a Path to Focused Attention

July 11, 2014 by Golden Door

On a beautiful summer morning, Golden Door guests were treated to a wonderful breakfast on the mountain summit facilitated by special guest presenter Reverend Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas: The Worldwide Labyrinth Movement.  After hiking to the mountaintop and walking the labyrinth with the ancient sound of the didgeridoo, breakfast was served. The tables were beautifully set, the breakfast burrito was warm and nourishing and the fresh fruit was beautifully displayed along with the fresh Golden Door tea.  After breakfast, guests gathered to tell their stories and all had meaningful insights to share. During Disconnect to Reconnect Week, guests said goodbye to tablets, laptops, cellphones, all of which were safely stored in a beautiful box of their own making.  Instead of the chirping of electronics, guests enjoyed the chirping of birds.  Rather than counting emails, they counted their breaths on a morning hike; living truly in the moment, uninterrupted.  Imagine …
